One of Mike Ward’s recent assignments was to oversee the installation of an electric fence system around the chimpanzee enclosure at Wellington Zoo.
But usually his work centres around more traditional forms of livestock.
Mike is Territory Manager for the Wellington, Wairarapa and Central North Island region – an area that spans from Raetihi to Wellington and encompasses a variety of farming types.
His clients range from large scale corporate farming operations to lifestyle block owners. While electric fencing products occupy most of his time, he says a growing number of clients are seeking advice on livestock weighing and EID technology.
Mike has been with Gallagher Animal Management since 2001 and he has a strong background in the rural service industry. Previous jobs include five years marketing conventional fencing and wire products and seven years managing a retail store for a rural merchandiser.
He and wife Karen have three children, Jacob, Ashleigh and Mitchell, and live in Ashhurst where five years ago they opened a childcare centre – a business which Mike jokingly refers to as “like farming children”.
An adventurous type, Mike’s hobbies include hunting, fishing and white water kayaking. And he recently became a pit crew mechanic (unpaid) for his go-carting son.
